Choose the silhouette first
A straight arrangement feels restrained; a low central drape feels softer; longer tails create a more dramatic outline. Measure the mantel width and each tail separately before choosing a length. You can try the shape with string before bringing foliage into the room.
Build one clear focal point
Start with the greenery and one repeated accent, such as rust-red ribbon or natural wooden ornaments. A few repeated details often feel more coherent than many unrelated decorations. Keep any display stable and follow the fixing guidance for the chosen surface.
Treat a working fireplace differently
Decorative photographs are not installation instructions. Keep foliage, ribbon, wiring and other decorations away from heat and flames and follow the fireplace and garland manufacturers’ clearances. If those requirements cannot be met, decorate a different surface.
Leave room for daily use
Check that battery packs and plugs are accessible and that cables are not pinched. If you use an unlit garland, add only lighting intended for the location and follow its instructions. Finish by viewing the arrangement from the doorway as well as from directly in front.
